#8: Broomstick & String Crochet Rugs
BROOMSTICK RUGS
These rugs
were made by
looping a warp (either of string or fabric strip) over the handle of a
broom
and drawing fabric strip through the loops. They have a distinctive,
almost
woven appearance on one side and a knotted texture on the reverse. |
STRING CROCHET RAG RUGS
These rugs
were also called 'baling twine' rugs since it was commonly used as the
"warp" thread. The rugs are constructed using the "warp" thread to
crochet
with over a strip of fabric. The reciprocal construction (upper photo)
gives the first impression that the rug is loom woven.
The radial
construction (lower photo) shows a distinctive coiled appearance. Front
and back surfaces of both of the types of string crochet rugs are
nearly
identical.
See the Rugmakers Exchange
for some
photos of an old String crochet rug of this type.
